Florida Eyes Nuclear Future Amid Energy Shift

What's happening: Florida is exploring the potential for expanding its nuclear power capabilities. The state Public Service Commission is set to begin a study on "advanced" nuclear technologies, including potential installations at military bases. This initiative follows a legislative directive embedded in a broader energy bill signed by Gov. DeSantis.
Key dates: The Florida Public Service Commission will hold a workshop to kick things off on September 5th, with the goal of completing a feasibility report by April 2025.
Florida's current landscape: Existing plants include St. Lucie and Turkey Point, both operated by Florida Power & Light. Duke Energy Florida's Crystal River plant was shut down in 2013.
National context: In May, the Biden admin formed a working group to promote efficient and cost-effective nuclear energy deployment. Additionally, the U.S. Army is investigating the use of advanced reactors at its bases, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is streamlining nuclear project permits.
Why it matters: Nuclear energy currently provides about 13% of Florida's electricity, but the state hasn't seen new nuclear plants since the late 20th century. Renewed interest in nuclear power stems from a focus on reducing carbon emissions and developing safer, more efficient reactor technologies.
