Orlando-Based Company MyRadar is Sending Palm-Sized Satellites to Space

Driving the news: MyRadar, a weather data company based in Orlando, is launching satellites to monitor and detect wildfires. While building the tech isn’t easy, the real challenge is getting these satellites into space efficiently and affordably.

Why it matters: The satellite industry dominates 71% of commercial spaceflight revenue. MyRadar CEO Andy Green plans to play a part in that, with the company aiming to deploy a constellation of 150 tiny satellites for early wildfire detection.

Simplifying the process: Space launches are complex and costly, but the rise of launch brokers is simplifying access. These intermediaries package multiple smaller payloads for single launches, making space more accessible for companies like MyRadar.

State of play: MyRadar's initial launch will see German launch aggregator Exolaunch sending up two of its satellites. The cost of launching these satellites, which are palm-sized, is under $50,000 each. Green is optimistic about future price reductions as more launch providers enter the market.

Zooming out: Central Florida's commercial spaceflight impact is growing, with increasing launch activity and economic potential. Space Florida is preparing infrastructure to support this boom, aiming to position Florida as a key player in aerospace commerce in years to come.

What to watch: As competition heats up, expect more innovative and cost-effective solutions in the satellite launch market, making space increasingly accessible for smaller enterprises.
